UKG (formerly Kronos) has limited API access for workforce data. Schedule management, timesheet approval, and labor compliance workflows require navigating the UI. Here's how operations teams automate them.
Kronos — now UKG (Ultimate Kronos Group) after the merger with Ultimate Software — is the dominant workforce management platform for hourly and shift-based workforces. UKG Pro handles HCM, UKG Dimensions handles time and attendance, scheduling, and labor analytics.
UKG has APIs, but they're inconsistently documented and coverage varies by product version. UKG Pro has reasonable REST API coverage for employee records and basic HR operations. UKG Dimensions (formerly Workforce Dimensions) has an API for some time and scheduling operations. The problem: both products are used for complex operational workflows that the APIs don't expose. Schedule exception management, mass timecard editing, overtime approval queues, and labor compliance reporting are process-driven tasks that live in the application layer.
UKG is most commonly deployed by organizations with large distributed workforces — retail chains, healthcare systems, manufacturing facilities, logistics companies. These organizations have dozens or hundreds of locations, each with its own schedule, compliance requirements, and manager responsible for timecard approvals.
Corporate operations teams need aggregate visibility that UKG's reporting doesn't provide efficiently. Pulling schedule compliance data across 200 retail locations manually in UKG is a multi-hour task. Request-layer automation can loop across locations, aggregate the relevant metrics, and deliver a summary — in minutes, without navigating each location's screens individually.
Many UKG installations are on-premises or in private cloud environments, particularly in healthcare and manufacturing. This means automation needs to run from within the corporate network. Cloud-hosted automation tools can't reach these systems. On-premises execution is the only practical approach.
UKG sits upstream of payroll — timecard data flows from UKG to ADP, Paycom, or a payroll processor at cycle close. Automating the readiness check and exception resolution in UKG before the payroll cutoff is high-value: fewer corrections, faster close, less manual reconciliation. Request-layer automation can monitor UKG state, flag exceptions, and trigger downstream payroll process steps when the data is clean.
